CERREJON P40 EXPANSION PROJECT PUERTO BOLIVAR, COLOMBIA SOUTH AMERICA
In 2013, Norton Corrosion Limited (NCL) was retained to provide complete cathodic protection (CP) engineering/design, materials, installation supervision and system commissioning of an impressed current system protecting steel piles on a new expansion dock.
This facility is located on the Atlantic Ocean in the remote coastal area of Colombia South America. In the mid 1980’s, as a subconsultant to the prime contractor firm Morrison Knudsen International, NCL provided a similar CP package for the facilities original Coal Berth dock, RoRo dock, Commodities Dock and buried metal piping.
NCL provided all necessary calculations and prepared bid ready installation CAD drawings and specifications for all project phases. Because of the remote area which the project is located, NCL’s manufactured high yield/highly durable Morganodes® were specified and installed throughout all phases of the docks construction. The rugged design made them a perfect fit for this rugged environment.

Power Generating Facilities
Coal-Fueled Power Generating Facility – Bangkok, Thailand
Supplied threaded and flange-mount Bayanode® probe anodes, Bayanode® reference cells, automatic rectifiers, manual rectifiers, and monitoring to protect large diameter water piping and condenser water box interiors. Galvanic anodes protect remote piping areas. NCL’s Morganode II’s protect pump housings. This facility produces electricity, steam, clarified and demineralized water.
Combined-Cycle Power Generating Facility – Carlsbad, CA
Design/supply/supervise install and test Bayanode® probe anodes & reference cells for an impressed current CP system that protects saltwater heat exchangers. Annual inspection of NCL-designed CP protecting condensers, heat exchangers, yard pipe and inbound fuel lines.
Nuclear – Fueled Power Generating Facility – Veracruz, Mexico
Design/supply/supervise install and test Bayanode® probe anodes & reference cells and automatic rectifiers for an impressed current CP system that protects saltwater heat exchangers. Start-up services and spares, post-installation acceptance testing, prepare O&M manuals and report.

International Airport Fuel Lines – Portland, Oregon
Annual inspections/maintenance of NCL designed impressed current CP system. Rectifier repair, develop O&M program. Redesigned CP system in 2009 to comply with site requirements for simplified maintenance program.

AC/DC Mitigation on Petroleum Pipeline – Denver, Colorado
NCL was tasked to eliminate or validate client concerns regarding AC mitigation of new coated steel petroleum products pipeline. 250 of 450 total miles of the route will travel under high voltage power lines. Location is in “open” rural cross-country environment, except for first 15 miles near and around airport open areas. 250 miles of the pipeline corridor contains up to 6 overhead transmission lines and three regulated foreign products pipelines. NCL was also tasked to perform a Stray Current Corrosion evaluation and cathodic protection design.
Natural Gas Pipeline – Portland, Oregon
NCL provides on-call corrosion engineering services- pipeline annual surveys, close interval surveys, and forensic analysis. Troubleshoots many CP systems protecting pipeline. We provide specialty materials upon request, and support field crews with install assistance when requested.
Mix Products Pipeline – Seattle, Washington
Performed Close Interval Survey/Cathodic Protection inspection of 360 miles of pipeline. Identified and located potential corrosive anomalies along pipeline right of way. In addition to a Leak Detection Survey on the NG Lines.
Mix Products Pipeline – Bellingham, Washington
Performed Close Interval Survey / Depth of Cover / Cathodic Protection inspection of 66 miles of pipeline. Identified and located potential corrosive anomalies along pipeline right of way.
Field / Distribution / Refinement – Kenai, Alaska
Design, install and maintain the CP systems to protect the buried pipelines and on-grade storage tank bottoms from external corrosion.

Wastewater Treatment Plant – Juneau, Alaska
Performed on-site design survey leading to design engineering of cathodic protection systems for various lift stations and wastewater treatment plants. After installation by others, NCL completed post-installation acceptance testing.
Primary Clarifier Sludge Dewatering – Everett, Washington
Design, supply and installation of a galvanic CP system for all metallic parts submerged in the primary water clarifier. NCL regularly inspects and maintains the CP systems at this location.

City of Salem – Salem, Oregon
NCL performs Annual Inspections of the city’s above ground water reservoirs, water distribution pipelines, buried sewer pump stations, and sewer force mains. Recommendations with cost estimates accompany our inspection reports. As the Corrosion Engineer for the city, we complete our work in a manner that allows the City to complete CP work themselves, publicly bid CP work to obtain competitive costs when their work is fully designed, or authorize our firm to complete that work.
